Mehrabad Airport in Tehran

Mehrabad Airport in Tehran is the largest airport for domestic flights in Tehran and is considered one of the most important airports in Iran. Mehrabad Airport organizes about 18 million passengers every year with the cooperation of 15 domestic airlines, which is regarded as the first and largest airport in the country. Mehrabad includes five parking lots for passenger cars with a capacity of about 7000 parking spaces, and about ten companies, with the cooperation of some food and clothing brands and internal and external services, are engaged in providing services to passengers in Mehrabad terminals. Mehrabad has an air traffic control tower equipped with Aria radars and two runways where airport activities occur. Mehrabad Airport has the most up-to-date machines and equipment in the world in security and fire departments. Currently, the growth of demand for air travel has made Imam Khomeini Airport help Mehrabad Airport accept some long routes of domestic flights to provide more opportunities for development in Mehrabad.

Mehrabad Airport has played an important role in Iran’s aviation, political and economic developments. After training the first group of Iranian pilots in America, the Iranian Air Force officially started its activities in Mehrabad Airport in 1949. At that time, Mehrabad was considered the largest airport in the Middle East. Iran’s membership in ICAO (International Aviation Organization) was considered a big step forward in developing our country’s aviation industry in the air transportation of passengers and cargo.

Before the establishment of Imam Khomeini Airport, Mehrabad was the largest airport in Iran, where both domestic and international flights took place. Currently, this airport hosts domestic and pilgrimage flights.

Tehran Mehrabad International Airport is currently the hub for Ata Airlines, Atrak Airlines, Caspian Airlines, Iran Air, Iran Airtour Airlines, Aseman Airlines, Karoon Airlines (Naft), Kish Air, Mahan Airlines, Meraj Airlines, Qeshm Airlines, Taban, Zagros Airlines, Sepehran Airlines, Soha Airlines and Varesh Airlines for passenger flights and Iran Air, Mahan, and Aseman for cargo flights.

History Mehrabad Airport

The area where Mehrabad International Airport is now found was a village called Mehrabad (Husseinabad) during the Qajar period. After, when this area was given as a dowry to Esmat al-Dawlah, the name Mehrabad was selected.

It was in 1946 that, for the first time, the individuals of Tehran saw an airplane passing over their city. This time was the end of World War II. Of course, in addition to this plane being a Russian plane, even its pilot was a Russian. This plane was transported to Tehran in separate parts, and assembling it provided the possibility of flying the first plane over Tehran. In Tehran at that time, there was no news of tall buildings. For this reason, this plane flew very low altitude and was well visible.

After this incident and following the increase in the use of airplanes in World War II, the aviation industry worldwide made significant progress. In February 1925, the first airplane was built in Iran. This German airline called Junkers was used exclusively.

Twenty-two years after this incident, Iran took a more significant step toward the country’s aviation industry. After establishing a pilot club and importing 20 planes, the modern Mehrabad International Airport was finally established in 1938. But Iran’s action in aviation ambition did not stop. In 1946, several American Air Force pilots were sent to Iran so that the Iranian Air Force could finally start flying in Mehrabad in 1949. In the year Mehrabad Airport was launched, none of the Middle East countries except Iran had such a big airport.

Another forward movement was Iran’s membership in the ICAO organization, which caused further growth and progress in Iran’s aviation industry (passenger and cargo). At that time, Imam Khomeini International Airport did not exist, and Mehrabad Airport was considered the country’s largest and most important airport. Now, Mehrabad Airport hosts only domestic flights and some pilgrimage flights, and other flights, most of which are global flights, are held out at Imam Khomeini Airport.
